Why a Christmas song?

The tree is long gone, ornaments safely tucked away, and the decorations all packed up again until next year. So why, you might ask, have I posted a Christmas song above? Well, aside from the fact that the message about homelessness is so appropriate given our mission, the lyrics of that particular song echo the sentiments of my heart.

Yes, we do live in a world very much in need. Lives all around us are being torn apart on a daily basis for any number of reasons. Illnesses, lost jobs, lost homes, crime, accidents, natural disasters, man-made disasters, broken relationships, addictions, mental illnesses, isolation, and perhaps the worst of all, lack of hope.  We may not know how or why a person comes to be in the places they find themselves, but it's not necessary that we do. If I see a suffering human being and turn away, I am wrong. No matter what the cause. To paraphrase my hero, Mother Teresa, we belong to each other. We forget that at times, but we are a family. When one member is in need, it is our duty - no, let me rephrase that, it's our PRIVILEGE to reach out and offer a hand up. To give what we can even if all we have to offer is the recognition of another human being in pain, it's all good. It's all needed. It doesn't matter if we come from different races, it doesn't matter if we believe in different Gods. Name any difference you can think of and I'll still say the same thing. It just doesn't matter.

What counts, what really matters to us and to the God we serve, is that we learn to love one another as He loves us. Jesus came here that first Christmas in the form of a poverty stricken, homeless baby to teach us that.  Love doesn't demand explanations, it just gives. And no matter what time of year it is, or what the date happens to be, whenever we allow Him to use our hands to touch and serve suffering humanity, it's Christmas all over again.  Merry Christmas everyone - let's make it every single day!

...we have gotten out close to 100 care packs over the last couple of weeks. The worst storm of the year is upon us so the timing was perfect! Way to go, my brother! Glad you're part of the team! Cool

Began putting the new packs together this afternoon. So far we have fleece scarves, socks, toiletries, first aid supplies, candles, matches, candy, small sewing kits, paper & pens. There are so many things I'd still like to add though - hats, gloves, non-perishable foods, duct tape...and on & on! I'll soon be adding complete lists of needed items for anyone interested in helping out. If you have things to donate, we'll find someone who needs it!organizing
